I recently watched this entire series, and although the first few episodes initiate uninteresting, the series is extraordinary. The writers have created a explain that combines science fiction with level-headed terror and fantastic sage telling that will not let you down. If you have only seen an episode, or even unbiased allotment of an episode, engage my advice and glance the series from the beginning. I had seen the present on a few times, but it failed to accumulate my attention because I was wondering what the heck was going on. Sanctuary is the first sci-fi exhibit in a while that I have been really ecstatic watching. Now that I have seen the first season, I will most certainly be watching Season 2.

- Some of the scenes are downright astonishing.

Hope this review has been suited, as I mediate a lot of people will admire this point to, but either don’t know about it, or don’t want to risk wasting their time.

I treasure it, and I judge you will indulge in it as well!

Imagine this: a giant gothic building that serves as a “sanctuary” to various odd, freakish and/or unsafe creatures that exist in the world.

That’s the understanding late “Sanctuary: The Complete First Season,” a fantasy/sci-fi reveal that started off as a series of webisodes, then got turned into a display for the Sci Fi (Sy Fy? ) Channel. The first season starts off shaky and sometimes painfully droll (nubbins!), but the second half suddenly smooths itself into a solid arc of secrets, conspiracies, and a fanatical enemy organization.

Forensic psychiatrist Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne) has a heavenly foul life — his girlfriend has left, his job is a joke, and nobody believes his deductions. But during a bizarre abolish investigation, he encounters a uncommon woman named Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) who offers him a job at the Sanctuary.

The Sanctuary turns out to be a ample cathedral-like structure filled with “Abnormals” — mermaids, elementals, iguana-men, two-faced dudes, or anything that doesn’t tumble in the boundaries of known science. But the Sanctuary’s residents are now in difficulty from a charming Abnormal named John Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl), who has a longtime connection to Helen. And unless he gets what he wants from her, he’ll raze her daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup) .

Other Sanctuary problems: a trio of amnesiac women who may be the Morrigan, a drug lord among the Folding Men, an autistic boy whose pictures assure Abnormals, a Himalayan plane shatter with a mind-altering monster, a brain parasite in the Bermuda Triangle that threatens to turn Magnus into a psycho killer, the superfertile Nubbins (like carnivorous Totoros), a man who looks suspiciously like Magnus’ unhurried father, and a pair of reporters who inspect the Sanctuary team fighting rare killer insects. And John Druitt reappears to divulge that an ancient friend of Helen’s has turned against her…

And the Sanctuary has a original enemy — the fanatical Cabal, who want all Abnormals under their control. When they unleash a biological weapon that turns Abnormals into raving killers, Helen’s worn stare group (”The Five”) must reunite to set aside the Abnormal population.

The first half of “Sanctuary: The Complete First Season” is a severely mixed bag — most of it isn’t really unpleasant, but it’s not terribly novel or entertaining. And the “nubbins” (tribbles with teeth) episode is unbiased embarrassingly comical. But with the introduction of Nicola Tesla (who is a vampire!), suddenly the entire series tightens up and becomes far more streamlined, complex and emotionally noteworthy.

Along the procedure, the writers contain the series with all sorts of freaky creatures (ranging from a Hulk-like supersoldier to a floating snake beastie), slimy body parts, and some gun-heavy action scenes. The writing is rather wobbly in the first half (”Women and geeks first… oh, no, that’s all of us”), but the sci-fi edge gives it a quirky appeal (”I guess Ike didn’t want to breathe the same air as the Nazi High Teach.” “Some of them didn’t even breathe air”) .

And “Sanctuary” has a radiant striking leer — half industrial science complex, and half Gothic decay, with stout cathedral-like buildings, grey cloudy skies, and the half-ruined Customary City. Most of the backgrounds are CGI, which gives the series a level-headed, stylized see.

Despite her awkward accent, Tapping is a mighty presence as the hyperintellectual, immortal Helen Magnus, and Dunne is incandescent from the open as the Daniel Jackson of the series (quick-witted and geeky, with a tragic past) . Ryan Robbins is astronomical as the resident techno-superbrain, who is unnerved by his maintain Abnormal secret, and Christopher Heyerdahl does a intelligent two-character turn — he’s the charming, serene killer John Druitt, and he’s also the timorous but capable butler Bigfoot.

The one fallacious ticket is Ashley — while Ullerup does a radiant job, the character is an urban fantasy cliche — cocky, gun-happy, and wears a leather catsuit during fights. But the supporting cast is attractive curious, especially since the writers launch ushering in Victorian literary and historical figures.

“Sanctuary: The Complete First Season” has some powerful wobbles in its first half, but the second half stabilizes and flowers like a shadowy rose. Seek it, if nothing else to prepare for the second season.

I am a enormous fan of the terminator series. I consider the anecdote is one of the best ever concieved as it has alot to do with whats really going on in the world. Will artificial intelligence ever come a point were it becomes self aware? Its a very attractive put a question to and I consider that is one of the reasons why it has been so successful as a series. This is also one of the only trilogys that I feel serene has alot of potential for future movies. I judge we really need a terminator film that is actually area in the future where the terminators live and with the novel announcment of T4 most likly being made, hopefully we will procure honest that.

As for T3, it is without a doubt the worst film of the 3 but with that being said I mild really enjoyed this film. Alot of the people that disliked it did so because they said it went aid on everything that was established in T2. I am not one of these people and I really like the aspect of this film that turned around and said Judgement day is inevitable. Its without a doubt the single best twist to this entire anecdote in my conception because in reality it really is. Technology will continue to drive forward with computers getting better and better and no matter what you do to close it, someone else will pop up and continue the research and development. Its basically where we are today with technology. There is no stopping the advancment that we recognize taking status on almost a daily basis. If one company were to close develpment in a determined status, someone else would fair pop up and bewitch that companies or persons dwelling.

Anyways that is really why I liked this film so considerable. It took the series in a completly novel direction by stating that there was no arrangement to conclude it while the first two movies focused on what to do to actually conclude it. With that being said this movie had its flaws and it objective isnt on the same level that T1 & T2 are on. Its calm a highly spellbinding action film with some grand performances and a gargantuan ending that perfectly sets up the Terminator film that I am dying to examine, the one site in the wasteland of the future. Hats off to Arnold as well who really busted his butt to derive into killer shape for this film so he wouldnt observe any different than he did during the first 2 films. He pulled it off without a hitch. Honest another testament to that guys ability to work his body and regain into killer shape.

Anyways on to the HD-DVD…

There were a few people on the HD forums that were disappointed in this transfer as it didnt point to the amount of detail that some of the better transfers have shown. While it is proper that this transfer doesnt have the detail exhibit in some of the other transfers like Aeon Flux, Batman Begins and Sahara, it is quiet a colossal looking film and a gargantuan improvment overthe SD version. One of the thing you have to hold into fable is the fact that definite films honest translate over to HD with noteworthy better results than others do. T3 was shot using Super35 and to sum up the Super35 process, it doesnt exercise as worthy plot on the negative that regular anamorphic does thus you have a dinky loss of detail compared to those that employ standard anamorphic. With Super35 you also have to manufacture intermediate prints to find the transfer onto a film that can be customary in theatres. Everytime you earn an intermediate print you lose resolution and detail. So to sum it up as I really dont want to score into a mammoth technical discussion on Super35 and the other film processes. Super35 honest does not have the image quality that regular anamorphic does period. T3 is a super35 film thus when you transfer the t3 film onto HD it honest isnt going to eye as curious as a lot of the other films that arent Super35. Some of the main characteristics of Super35 are increased grain and less detail, both which are reveal in the HD transfer of T3.

With that being said, T3 mild looks spacious and is a great improvment over the SD version. I am actually a fan of increased graain as long as it doesnt inspect noisy which in this case it doesnt. It adds a disticnt perceive to the film. As powerful as some people would appreciate for every film to study like the Batman Begins of Aeon Flux transfer, its unprejudiced a dreadful plan. To produce evey film ogle the same would be like taking all of the artistic possibilites of film and throwing them down the toilet. Its pleasurable that films witness different because it would be a very stupid world of cinema if everything looked the same. Unprejudiced image what Tim Burtons Sleepy Hollow would study like if he venerable the same film and process veteran for Batman Begins. It would have absolutly destroyed the film and would have taken all of the spooky atmoshpere away. He purposly dilapidated rotten processing to beget all of the colors washed out and to do it more grainy and more contrasty. That film also looks sizable on HD-DVD but like T3 doesnt have a transfer that shows as considerable detail as some of the other transfers.

The sooner everyone relaizes that not every film is supposed to have wonderful detail, brilliant colors, & natural difference. Films differ by the processes broken-down to develop the film and those differences in process equate to a incompatibility in characteristics in a HD transfer. You have to educate yourself on fair what processes were aged for each particular film and only then can you compose an educated critique of a particular films HD transfer.

To sum this up, T3 is certainly not a disc you want to pop in when your trying to prove someone impartial how remarkable detail can be seen in a HD movie. It was filmed in Super35 thus it was never trying to be a film that had a crazy amount of detail in the print. With that being said, T3 is a large transfer that is proper to its master print. Its a mammoth improvment over the SD version and its a tall film which hopefully leads the series to a 4th film which is plot in the future. I know I wont ever be done with the plan of a original Terminator flick until that particular fable has been told. Here is to hoping they accept around to making that happen.

OC..

I give the film five stars, because I like the movie. About the 1080i issue: if you contain an mistaken T3 Blu-Ray disc, you can call Warner’s customer service number at 1-800-553-6937 for an exchange.

The title STALKER is quite misunderstood because many contemplate it is a translation from a Russian word that means ‘to stalk.’. Actually Tarkovsky’s script inserted the word STALKER thinking it was a catchy English equivalent for something like a Russian pathfinder or guide. In that context, the central character’s role is better understood, for he spends time leading the writer and scientist toward discovery and revelation, which they ultimately cannot carry out. STALKER is a masterpiece of imposed reality on the viewer. Manufacture no mistake: this film is very difficult to end with without your utmost attention. Shrimp artifice, few physical elements, hardly any location, STALKER exists as a jog that draws your mind, heart, and soul into the nature of human existence. Only those quick-witted and sensitive enough to creep Tarkovsky’s waves of feeling, emotion, and view can comprehend his message of possible salvation and redemption through treasure and persistent searching for human truth. The writing on the video box implies this is another sci fi film, but clearly it is not. Tarkovsky’s substantial films are mythical allegories in the tradition of Pilgrim’s Progress or Piers Plowman. For me, Tarkovsky is the ultimate challenge in shiny film making, because he presents and discusses his ideas only in the context of the film itself, not unbiased as a media vehicle to command. What strikes me most is his absolutely consistent sense of dart in all his films: lifeless, deliberate, but fluid and highly organic. He is one of the few grand masters of film as an art compose.

This is a film about faith, divine grace and the fruitless vanity stemming from our soul’s unique sin. To quote from one of the characters in the film,” My mind preaches vegetarianism, but my heart longs for a juicy part of steak.” And this is the premise of the three characters glide into the Zone - to contemplate out their steak: to acquire the Room in the Zone that will grant them their wishes; and this coming from the very same people whose professions demands higher standards of legal living from them, careers that require them to preach vegetarianism. Of course they have failed in their lives professions, and the characters know this but their inner chaos stem from the private difficulty in their lives, their failure to live up to their calling and their denial/certainty about their indivisual failures and states of their tarnished souls. Although Stalker is someone who leads others into the the Zone as a guide, his purpose apparently being to support others win their wish and thus bring about happiness for others, yet Tarkovsky hints that Stalker’s outward explaination is dubious as he will not hesitate to acquire scapegoats and guinea pigs of his clients in the face of uncertainty and worry. As for Writer, he is, yes, a writer who is going into the Zone to see and beg for inspiration and faith in life as a whole; until Writer can bag this wish, his cynicism and lack of faith can be summed up in one of his quotes:” A writer can only write about his readers.” Professor is a scientist whose reason for seeking out the Room is unspecified until at the very slay of the film but I will not relate his reason. He is a researcher who has to acquire his boss’s fury and defintely hates his job at the lab. Many mammoth cinematic moments are to be found in the film, in fact the film is one gargantuan cinematic moment non-stop, even after it ends, and this can be attributed to Tarkovsky’s colorful handling of every aspect of the film; one can even go so far as to say that with this film tarkovsky proved that he is easily the Einstein of cinema. His vision is earth shattering, deviating almost completely from the novel intentions of the writers of a new on which the film was based. The ending when it is revealed the reason why one of the guides of the Zone hanged himself despite obtaining a wish from the Room will blow away anyone who lives in the frustrated knowledge of life and all our mortal desires as an empty vainity of vanities without the presence of God and selfless adore. The editing, space designs, music and lighting, the human choreography, the wisdom and everything in this film qualifies it as the best film ever made. Totally modern without trying to be. If you only spy one film for the rest of your life this has to be it! It will acquire you want to live better, stirring profound thoughts and feelings within you long after the film’s over. This is more than a film, it’s almost a miracle. The British imprint ARTIFICIAL Glance apparently has better English subtitles and shows the complete film without cuts unlike the American version, or so I read.

Although CSI is definitely one of the best shows on television, this dvd is a shrimp bit of a letdown. It’s bare bones as far as extras go (which is not taking advantage of the dvd format as far as I’m concerned) . There’s no subtitles (I’m not deaf, but what if I was? ) . The tag is almost twice as powerful as any other season of a network television note (most others range from $40-$50) . I collected believe it’s a expansive display, but they could’ve done a better job. If you really wanna peruse it, rent it. UPDATE: DO NOT Prefer THIS. They are re-releasing this in the coming months with extras and in anamorphic widescreen format (like they did with all the other releases) so Attach YOUR MONEY and capture the spot they should’ve released to launch with.

Simply, the best explain on T.V. Each seaon is mammoth and now you can examine your popular episodes anytime you want. You’ll obtain 24 episodes in the first season, including some of the best of the series.

“In the United States things have changed a lot, and it’s hard to originate valid petite films now. The avaricious studios couldn’t care less about profitable films.”–Woody Allen.

Woody Allen has said that European audiences are more receptive to his films these days than American audiences. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) is his fourth European movie, and in many ways his most French film yet. State in Avilés, Barcelona, and Oviedo, Vicky Cristina Barcelona follows Allen’s London films, Match Point (2005), Scoop (2006), and Cassandra’s Dream (2007) . It stars Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation), Javier Bardem (No Country for Venerable Men), Patricia Clarkson, and Penélope Cruz (Volver), and tells the epic of a lovers’ threesome. Shortly after arriving in Barcelona on vacation, two young American women in their 20s, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Johansson), are invited by a smooth-talking artist, Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) to employ a weekend in Oviedo, drinking wine and making admire with him. Because she is engaged to be married, pragmatic Vicky is reluctant at first. Cristina, however, is initiate to the seduction. The two women acquire Juan Antonio’s proposal, and accompany him to Oviedo, where they soon view the painter has a thing for his fine, but emotionally unstable estranged-wife, María Elena (Cruz) . After Juan and Vicky drink wine and compose admire, Cristina, Juan, and María Elena soon score themselves living together. It becomes evident to Cristina that Juan Antonio and María Elena are smooth madly in savor with each other. Bardem and Cruz bring a chemistry to the camouflage that sizzles. Ultimately, the film then becomes a engaging Woody Allen meets Éric Rohmer (Eric Rohmer’s Six Fair Tales - Criterion Collection) meets Pedro Almodóvar (Volver) exploration of the dynamics of this sexually free-spirited lovers’ threesome, contrasted by Vicky’s more old relationship with her monotonous, Unusual York buttoned-down adore interest, Doug (Chris Messina) . Fair as Manhattan was central to Manhattan, Barcelona features prominantly in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, especially Gaudí’s Park Güell. Remarkable like a favorable French film, this vivid movie ends on a sign that is both poignant and shadowy, with everyone a petite wiser in the demolish. Once the celluloid like poet of Manhattan, with Vicky Cristina Barcelona Allen reveals he is distinguished wiser now when it comes to the ways of the heart. It is “a very dismal film” (as Allen calls it) only because of the message it sends about relationships. Some couples decide for convention rather than the madness of dependable cherish. Others, like Juan Antonio and Maria Elena, experience sincere worship with the level of chemistry we might call “soulmates,” only to accept they cannot live together. To exhaust an venerable cliche, Juan Antonio can’t live with Maria Elena, but can’t live without her. Allen seems to suggest that all we can really hope for in the raze, after stumbling around in any relationship, is a microscopic wisdom. Dare I say that this is Woody Allen’s best work since Hannah and Her Sisters? Unlike that film, however, this is a really profitable film Allen could have never made in Hollywood, which generally prefers feel-good admire stories with happily-ever-after endings.

12/05/08 Update: Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Jarvier Bardem, Rebecca Hall, and Penélope Cruz all received nods for Golden Globe Awards this week.

G. Merritt

In “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” Woody Allen begs to contradict another pundit of his age, Mick Jagger. Woody demonstrates in his latest movie that you can’t EVER derive what you want, and you also can’t accumulate what you need. He demonstrates this in the epic of how Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson), two comely young Americans staying in Barcelona for a few months, react to the romantic overtures of the dashing, primally sexy artist Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) . Vicky–a master’s candidate in “Catalan identity,” although she is not Catalan and barely speaks Catalan or even Spanish–finds that sex with Juan Antonio shakes up her previously solid feelings for her dullish American fiance, Doug (Chris Messina) . Cristina–a dilettantish photographer/filmmaker who is defined by the fact that she only knows what she DOESN’T want in a relationship with a man–finds greater satisfaction with Juan Antonio, at least until Maria Elena (Penelope Cruz), Juan Antonio’s volatile, insanely jealous ex-wife, shows up.

Some critics have opined that “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is a hackneyed blast at naive Americans left at sea by European sexual sophistication. However, I believe it’s more a delineation of Woody’s basic plan that happiness in appreciate is transitory at best. How can you possibly maintain up Juan Antonio and Maria Elena–who are constantly at each other’s throats, to the point that Maria Elena brandishes knives and guns–as an example of sexual sophistication? They can’t live with each other, they can’t live without each other, but she may kill up killing him, herself, and a few innocent bystanders. As enacted in a scintillating performance by Cruz, Maria Elena embodies the eternal irrationality of cherish, a blind craziness that–at least in Woody’s view–stamps an irrevocable expiration date on even the tenderest, most ardent appreciate.

Not quite a comedy but certainly not a tragedy, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is a rueful commentary on the constant dissatisfactions of admire and life, made all the more bittersweet by the heartbreakingly pleasing scenes of Barcelona and Catalunya wrapped in golden light by photographer Javier Aguirresarobe. The film offers us multiple pleasures–not least the trustworthy performances–yet, in the extinguish, it feels limited. There are too many of Woody’s familiar tropes for us to bewitch the film at face value, especially the overly familiar characters; personally, I’m tired of the ravishing, nubile young “Woody women” who are drawn vaguely toward a career in the arts yet are completely confused about everything except their need for hot sex. And, yes, Woody, we got the point decades ago that you reflect life and the Universe meaningless; why do you always have to have one character in every movie (in this case, Juan Antonio) state that understanding baldly? “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is worth seeing, but it falls short of being one of Woody’s masterpieces.

After viewing “Audition” and “Ichi the Killer,” I doubted whether Japanese director Takashi Miike could shock me again. Boy, was I obnoxious! If you idea the piano wire scene in “Audition” went far beyond the pale, or the hot oil bath in “Ichi the Killer” left you speechless–as it did me–prepare yourself for the unique nightmare that is “Visitor Q.” The scenes in this film about a hooked Japanese family would accomplish the Marquis de Sade leave the room in disgust. I have no plan what Miike was thinking when he made this film, but remember this one exiguous fact–”Visitor Q” is a made for television movie. That’s upright, after viewing this movie remind yourself that this obscenity aired on Japanese television within the last couple of years. We Americans cannot establish forth any prime time fodder that could even remotely compare to this atrocity, unless you count something like “Teletubbies.” Thank goodness we serene have a few qualms. As mighty as I distrust censorship of any type, I am definitely not ready to gaze something like “Visitor Q” on network television on this side of the pond.

“Visitor Q” takes a penetrating peek at your typical Japanese middle class family, Miike style. The father of this bizarre clan works as a reality television host who is always willing to go so far over the line in his broadcasts that his fellow workers shun the his very presence. The daughter of the family no longer lives at home since she is too busy putting in a fat schedule at a brothel somewhere in town. The young son in this creepy household spends his days meekly submitting to a trio of bullies who beat him up after school. The mother is a steady winner, a heroin addict and prostitute who allows her abused son to beat her with wicker canes. The mother and father fail to communicate on any substantive level. The son’s problems with the bullies goes unheeded by the family, except when the father decides to fashion a novel reality program centering on his child’s beatings. The relationship between the father and his daughter is best left unelaborated on here; it is sufficient to say it is one of the most warped father/daughter connections in film history. Yes, this family suffers a host of psychological problems that would give a Sigmund Freud a coronary.

All of these people are sick to the core of their souls, a plight that is about to undergo a radical change with the introduction of a complete stranger into the household. This anonymous (we never learn his name), scruffy looking youth first makes an appearance on the scene when he hits the father of the family on the head with a rock–twice. For some mysterious reason, dad brings this guy home with him for dinner. As time goes by, we study this chap increasingly integrate himself into the daily lives of the family. He sets his sights on the mother at first, rekindling a sense of motherhood in the woman in yet another unmentionable scene (there are a lot of unmentionable events in this movie) . The interaction between the stranger and the mother is the most dramatic in the film, but eventually the father, son, and even daughter all tumble under the spell of this enigmatic visitor. The kill result of these weird encounters is a type of queer healing, where the family abandons their insane behavior and returns to a sense of normalcy. Obviously, “Visitor Q” is a Miike film, so the healing takes some really stomach churning turns along the procedure. After all, there is nothing like dismemberment and a host of other depravities to turn a family around!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Visitor Q! Click Here

There has been some wretchedness to emphasize the reality television elements of the film, but “Visitor Q” has microscopic to do with this theme. There are only a few scenes that even deal with this element, specifically the first taboo shattering images between the father and daughter and a couple of other short bits later in the movie. What is really going on here has to do with the Japanese family and how it deals with the pressures of original life in an industrialized society. Miike likes to shock with his films, and his target audience must surely have expressed such an emotion when they saw his grasp on a used Japanese family plagued with so many unfavorable psychopathologies. As queer as it sounds, I firmly gain “Visitor Q” is actually an extremely conservative film. Even as the director breaks the bounds of splendid taste, he seems to contain an earnest idea in the overriding importance of the healthy family unit. You could easily get the argument that images of the type indulged in by Miike have led to the breakdown of the family, and it would be an effective argument, but this movie does maintain a strong pro-family theme.

“Visitor Q” runs for about eighty four minutes, short compared to the other two Miike films I have seen. The relate quality is reliable. Extras on the DVD include four trailers–”Visitor Q,” “Samurai Fiction,” “Fudoh,” and “Freeze Me”–some liner notes about Miike’s films and a short biography about the director. Once again, Media Blasters has released another soul shattering movie to DVD. The disc I watched had a technical spot, though: whenever I hit the menu button on my remote control the record went gray and I had to open the disc over again. Perhaps this flaw appeared only on my copy of the movie, but it’s something to judge about before purchasing if it is a widespread glitch. I survey forward to watching more Miike mayhem in the advance future. If you would like to demand this director’s queasy visions, “Visitor Q” is the ideal starting site before inspiring on to the more complex “Audition.”

A subversive legend from the incandescent Takashi Miike, Visitor Q is some kind of demented masterpiece. I detect diverse influences here, from Bunuel (his delight in mocking bourgeois values) to Kubrick (static, symmetrical compositions) to absurdism and surrealist film in general. Miike presents us with a family that gives original meaning to the word “dysfunctional.” The father is a TV reporter so desperate for sensational topics to tackle that he videotapes himself having sex with his prostitute daughter. He placidly eats his supper while his teenage son whips and beats the mother, who also works as a prostitute. One day the father brings home a mysterious guest (the titular Visitor, although his name is never given) who casually exerts an almost godlike power over the family, bringing them together in a most unexpected manner. The film is very comic at times, sometimes in an almost slapstick arrangement, sometimes in a VERY black, curved contrivance. There’s plenty of room for debate. Who or what is Visitor Q? What exactly has he done and what does it say about the nature of familial treasure? This fearless film will haunt you for days after seeing it.

This movie seems to get a bad rap for strange reasons. I had no problem whatsoever with the accents, nor did I think Cate Blanchett’s wardrobe was overly nice for wartime. (It was the FORTIES, and anyway, she’s in muddy clothes for most of the film.) My one and only complaint is that we get a clearer sense of Charlotte as Dominique than of Charlotte as Charlotte. Things seem to progress a little too quickly early in the film, so that we don’t know enough about who this girl was before she fell in love and started diving out of planes and blowing up Nazis. (This would help make the ending a tad more powerful.) Other than that–well played by all, very enjoyable, visually stunning, and as for the raging debate on accents, I’d like to say this: as Gillian Armstrong points out in the commentary, it’s better to have British people with shallow accents than French people with accents so thick you can’t understand them; Cate Blanchett was willing to do two-thirds of the film in French, but Armstrong feared criticism that her French wouldn’t be perfect; and, as for those German-speaking Germans, they’re foreigners taking over a foreign land. The fact that they’re not speaking the language of the audience or the language of the townspeople makes them seem more alien and menacing. Do we desperately need to know exactly what they’re saying? No, because you can figure out that they’re not saying much beyond, “Get zem into ze truck” or “Stop making out on ze floor, Frenchies!” So sit back and enjoy.

“Charlotte Gray” is a film which has left me stunned, amazed and grateful at the chance for being able to see such brilliance. The movie consists of a simply thrilling storyline, beautiful scenery and wonderous acting on the parts of every character. It is a film for those who are willing to believe anything is possible - that “there must be something to set against all this”.

Charlotte Gray is a young Scottish woman who falls in love with a soldier who goes off to WW2. His plane crashes, and so, she becomes a spy to go to Occupied France to rescue him. Upon arriving in the Vichey France; she meets a team of revolutionaries and a new, and tangled storyline emerges from there. Many criticise both book and film for shirking on the WW2 accuracy, but I feel that it *concentrates* on ceratin aspects of the War, instead of skimming over about twenty different circumstances.

Cate Blanchett is unbelievably good as Charlotte - she performs excellently and you can see how her character changes and grows throughout the film. Her stirring speech at the near the end of the movie is simply amazing - she delivers it with feeling and emotion. Billy Crudup took my breath away. He was more than fantastic in his role! He breathed life into the character of Julien, and captured my imagination with his performance. Truly excellent! Notable mentions go to all the other actors, but Billy and Cate stole the show, in my opinion.

If you are looking for a fantstic movie that will take you to another time and place, make you think, and allow you to both remember the pain and tragedy that WW2 brought; and the hope for humanity that was displayed by the brave people who fought for good - Charlotte Gray is the movie for you.

Apart from the slightly soft, washed-out characterize quality during the opening credits of the movie, the DVD edition of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA is proper. The movie itself is spread onto 2 discs, with the disc demolish occurs honest before Intermission. The Overture, Intermission, and the exit music are all played to a sunless hide, as per director David Lean’s novel wish. The narrate quality looks as current and neat as, quite frankly, any film made in the 90s. In the dramatic shot where Lawrence appears on the far horizon after he rescued his Arab companion, the higher represent resolution of DVD makes it possible for us to peep his microscopic figure whereas on VHS tapes or laserdisc it is so little it is almost impossible to contemplate. Anyone who is serious about watching this film should gather this DVD instead of any other version in order to be pleased the opulent cinematography and majestic atmosphere of this sage.

The disc has over 100 minutes of worn and unusual documentaries and news footage about the making of the film, plus two well-designed DVD-ROM features (for Windows PC only) : a interactive device showing the various journeys undertaken by the exact T.E. Lawrence, and a “split-screen” feature that simultaneously plays the movie and shows you text of behind-of-scene information of the particular chapter of the movie that is playing. Since the DVD lacks a second audio commentary, being able to explore the film while reading facts about it is not a dreadful substitute.

The included “booklet” is a reproduction of the 1961 program given to theater goers, we are told. A nice touch: the disc case resembles Lawrence’s diary in the movie.

It is unsurprising to me that some people bag Lawrence of Arabia unimaginative. If you have the attention span of a hummingbird, this is not a film you will like. It has no car chases, no bikini-clad supermodels, and nary a kung-fu go to be seen. Instead, all it offers is tortured respect for everything it touches. Lawrence of Arabia is a film that elevated the art of cinematic storytelling to recent heights, and it shows. It is the slip, not the destination, that the viewer should focus on. In order to savor this film, you must fabricate a commitment to examine it. Salvage comfortable, have something to drink on hand (you’ll know why about halfway through), turn off the phone, and save the remote under a pillow. I’ve seen a lot of films, and some I’ve liked to varying degrees, and others I’ve simply been blissful that Hollywood didn’t butcher the underlying work or premise too badly in pursuit of the lowest favorite denominator. Lawrence of Arabia is different. It is one of those truly rare films that makes you feel grateful for having seen it, for the efforts of all those keen to craft, beget, and perserve over the years unbiased so you might have the chance to survey it. It is such a graceful film that its merits are clear, and negative statements about it tend to simply mediate abet on the critic.

Why? Many reasons. The actors are likewise gifted with rare talent, and superbly cast. The settings and scenes are invariably breathtaking. The spot is tantalizing and enthralling without ever becoming heavy-handed. Film students will while away hours discussing everything from the Christ imagery to the undercurrents of homoeroticism, but they do that with every film. I suggest you simply kick support and devour an agreeable, time-honored anecdote about a stranger in a unusual land. It is a harrowing, draining coast, but one you will not regret.

Movie Title: Choke

“Choke” is so bizarre that I really don’t know what to make of it. It’s a fascinating film, but its eccentricities are at times so overplayed that it felt like they were being drilled into my head. The very concept doesn’t sit that well with me. It tells the story of a sex addict who cons rich people out of their money by pretending to choke in upscale restaurants. He does this, you see, because he has hospital bills to pay, all of which go towards the care of his mentally ill mother. Basically, “Choke” is a strange film about really strange people. That may be part of the film’s appeal, I guess, as is the fact that, in a demented sort of way, it’s actually very funny, although I’d be lying if I said that I completely understood the sense of humor. This adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel has a charm about it that’s oddly disturbing, which is to say that not all audiences are going to respond to it.

“Choke” begins in much the same way as another Palahniuk adaptation, “Fight Club”: the main character/narrator, Victor Mancini (Sam Rockwell), is introduced at a twelve-step meeting with other sex addicts (one of which is played by Joel Grey). And much like Edward Norton’s character, Victor doesn’t go for the therapy–he goes to meet women, and he spends quite a bit of time with the woman he’s supposed to be sponsoring. When he’s not having sex in dimly lit rooms or at restaurants begging for the Heimlich maneuver, he gets by as an historical tour guide for a Colonial-era theme park. He doesn’t get along with his superior, Lord High Charlie (Clark Gregg, the film’s writer and director), who always insists on keeping everything as historically accurate as possible. The two cardinal rules: No modern amenities, and absolutely no modern English. Victor works with his best friend, Denny (Brad William Henke), also a sex addict; he eventually falls in love with an exotic dancer named Cherry Daiquiri (it’s not her real name).

Victor’s sexual escapades aren’t limited to his addiction meetings. He has had passionate encounters with virtually every nurse at the mental hospital housing his mother, Ida (Anjelica Houston). She’s a surprisingly sad character, and not just because she doesn’t recognize her own son when he visits; through a series of flashback sequences (which I won’t describe), we discover that she wasn’t that good a person. It’s likely that years of guilt (and sniffing glue sticks) have contributed to her mental decline, which is probably why she wants to reveal a secret to Victor, one that would explain where he came from. This would mean a lot to Victor, who never knew his father. Unfortunately, since Ida always thinks Victor is someone else, he’s no closer to learning the truth. It doesn’t help that he can’t let go of the past, with years of resentment holding him back.

This brings me to Paige Marshall (Kelly Macdonald), who appears to be Ida’s doctor. Victor immediately finds her interesting, mostly because she’s the only health care specialist he hasn’t slept with. She initially refuses to give into him. She does, however, care deeply Victor’s mother, which is why she proposes … let’s just say an interesting method of restoring Ida’s mental condition (no need to spoil it for you). Then Victor discovers his mother’s old journal, written in Italian. Fortunately, Paige knows the language, so she can translate it for him. Hopefully, it will have the answers Victor is looking for. Paige eventually gives him … let’s just say an interesting explanation for where he came from (no need to spoil this one, either). Needless to say, Victor tries to have sex with Paige. But for the first time, something prevents him from going all the way. Maybe it’s because she offers herself in the middle of the hospital’s chapel. Could you get aroused with a crucified statue of Jesus staring down at you? Or maybe it’s because Victor actually likes Paige and wants to know her as a person.

I told you this was a strange movie. But that doesn’t mean I disliked it. The unusual characters and offbeat plot constantly made me wonder where the film would go next, and I have to say that it was a strangely satisfying experience. I won’t go so far as to say that I understood it, but I certainly enjoyed trying to figure it out. As for Victor, he isn’t as clear-cut a character as you might think. No one ever is. Consider the scene after he answers a personal ad on an adult website; the woman he meets is sexually stimulated by the thought of being raped, so she wants him to wear a stocking over his head and carry a knife. But the experience is a disaster for them both because he doesn’t want to follow her rules. Never mind the fact that she actually has rules for a successful rape–the simple fact is that, at that moment, a sex addict is unable to do what he does best. Why? Because he’s thinking of Paige? Because he only likes submissive women? Your guess is as good as mine.

Another way “Choke” is similar to “Fight Club” is that it ends with a plot twist that reverses half of what you think you know. As with most plot twists, the plausibility factor will likely undermine the cleverness, which in turn will undermine the message. How I feel about it, I’m still not entirely sure. I can say the same thing about the film in general. “Choke” prides itself on being an oddity, telling a story many won’t understand about characters many can’t identify with. That being said, I was intrigued all throughout. I found myself involved with the characters, and I wanted to know how the plot would be resolved. I’m recommending this movie, but it’s obviously not going to appeal to everyone.

“Choke” directed by Clark Gregg and base off the novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk.

Victor Mancini (Sam Rockwell) has been put in the tough spot of having to pay for his mother’s (Anjelica Houston) medical expenses. His mother has developed Alzheimer’s and must be cared for at all times. The resulting medical expenses are more than Victor’s current job at the local Colonial Theme Park can afford. Victor derives an unusual scam in which he frequents upscale dining establishments and makes himself choke on the food. The result being that one of the more well to do clients of the establishment saves him and from that point on feels somewhat parental towards Victor and continues to send money and gifts to him as time goes on. In between trips to the hospital, and working at the theme park Victor is visiting the local program he attends for sex addiction which he is not successful at beating. During one of his visits to his mother in which she thinks he is her lawyer she mentions that she needs to tell Victor more about his real dad. This fuels Victor to try and figure out what she hasn’t been telling him and his mother’s new Doctor, Paige Marshall (Kelly Macdonald) thinks she may have a way to save her and help him discover what he wants to know…

“Choke” is a decent Black comedy with unique characters and unique situations. This movie is definitely not going to be for everyone as many seem to have a deaf ear for this type of sarcastic humor and the sexual situations may be too much for some as well.

The Good: This was an atypical story which is a nice change from all the formulaic movies that are usually released. The acting all around seemed to be well done and the look of the movie was good. The main character although very troubled was very interesting and makes you interested in where the story is headed.

The Bad: There could have been a few more laughs sprinkled here and there and the movie felt like it ran a little long.

Overall: Not great but not terrible either. If you like black/sarcastic comedy and enjoy the feminine figure this might be for you but catch it on DVD, don’t rush to the theatre to see it.

The biggest quandary most people had with King Kong was its length, so there’s no surprise that reaction by the general public to the release of an extended edition of another 3 hour-plus Peter Jackson film was almost the equivalent of a collective groan.

Buy,Download, Or Stream King Kong! Click Here

The surprise is that everything added to the Extended Edition of King Kong should have never been sever. More dinosaurs and more creatures and more action on Skull Island only improves the film, and one wonders if these scenes were slice mostly for time and pacing, why wasn’t a itsy-bitsy bit of the 51 minutes of pre-Skull Island snipped or perhaps a few overly drawn scenes of Kong and Anna gazing into each other’s eyes?

The more noticable scenes are that of a rampaging Ceratops and a fun scene of an underwater monster attacking Adrien Brody and Co. while they are rafting down a river. A bit more character development with some seedy behavior by Carl Denham (Jack Dismal) and audacious deeds by Jack Driscoll and the shipmates add a bit of flavor to the male characters literally overshadowed by Kong in the film. The spider pit sequence is also a bit lengthened with some more lines by Jack Dismal. Overall, a superior 13 minutes of added material, but the film detached feels too long in the last act.

The special features to this extended edition are the special features that were missing from the first release of the Kong movie, including a commentary from Peter Jackson and extensive late the scenes features, describing the making of Kong from thought artwork to the shroud a la the performance of Andy Serkis.

I enjoyed the extended sever, but I don’t know that this lengthy movie is better served with added material. It’s not like the LOTR films where the additions enhance your viewing and belief of Tolkien’s world. But hey, I am not going to complain about more dinosaurs and the raft sequence I was disappointed was missing from the new carve.
