Make no mistake about it… a foodie isn’t honest someone who loves fine food; a foodie is someone who finds eating an adventure and is always searching for entirely unusual food experiences (which is why The Food Network is the antithesis of everything foodie. They should honest change their name to the Comfort Food Network - not that I have anything against comfort foods but there is a whole world of foods outside of the American diner experience!) . Outside of The Iron Chef, Tony Bourdain’s ‘No Reservations’ and Price Bittman’s ‘Best Recipes in the World’, there’s very minute TV-wise to stimulate us foodies, so this Astounding gem that unbiased popped from heaven like a truffle on your pillow really is nirvana. It’s Gourmet Magazine ‘live’ with all the sights and sounds and yes, even the smells and tastes. It also crams in a global experience that subtly underlines the fact that food is a language and an experience that all cultures can part together and bond with. If you’ve been starving for a demonstrate that raises your intelligence and spirits and actually acknowledges the other 6 billion people that live on this planet, peep no further. Thus reasoned young bushwhacker Jake Roedel, (Tobey Maguire) summing up the condition of his native Missouri, torn apart by savage guerilla warfare, as neighbor fought and killed neighbor during the Civil War. This outstanding movie manages to hold noteworthy the same attitude as it tells the yarn of this troubling period that has usually been handled in a mighty more partisan manner.

The Civil War in Missouri was particularly poor, as the loyalties and interests of the population split between the Union and the Confederacy. Few regular troops were committed to Missouri, and most of the fighting was done by roving gangs of Irregulars; Secessionist Bushwhackers and Unionist Jayhawkers. These men more often made war on those who once had been their neighbors and friends than on uniformed troops, and awful atrocities that were more abolish than war were committed by each side.

`Ride with the Devil’ is an incredibly thoughtful and nuanced telling of this dusky narrative. All of the protagonists are bushwhackers, but the movie does not attempt to paint them as pure heroes fighting against execrable for all that is wonderful and proper. Instead, it manages to prove them as young men who had the danger to be caught up in the sweep of history and forced into a violent life by unavoidable circumstances. We ogle the struggle some of them had between the violent actions that had become their life and their have sense of decency, and we witness others enthusiastically revel in the murderous mayhem - happy for the excuse the war had given them to be free of the constraints of civilized society. One scene in particular drives home the fact that these warriors were more boys than men. Jake (Maguire) faces his fresh bride, a young women already widowed by the war (Jewel) in the bedroom on their wedding night. When she asks him if he is a virgin, he blusters that “I’ve seen plenty” and when ask again if he has been with a woman, he seems frozen with dismay, and only manages to say, “Girl, I’ve killed fifteen men.” These were boys forced to become killers before many had the chance to be lovers.

Though there were no Unionist protagonists in this film, it old-fashioned an effective scheme to set across the humanity of the bushwhacker’s enemies. A captured mailbag was plundered, and letters were read aloud as the bushwhacker’s searched for enemy secrets. The letters turned out to be mundane messages from mothers to sons and brother to brother. The young men heard and answer how like their bear mothers and brothers these people sounded, and how in other circumstances they might net them glorious people, before someone reminded them that the sons of that mother would end them, given the chance.

`Ride with the Devil’ is filmed beautifully, and is as halt to being cinematically perfect as could be desired. Its scenes of violence are posthaste, realistic, and brutal, but the film does not dwell on them. Indeed, there are long sequences that deal with nothing but the complex interpersonal relationships of the characters, and action war movie junkies are likely to rep `Ride with the Devil’ a disappointment despite its realism. Tobey Maguire is perfectly cast as a shocked, decent young man trying to absorb his integrity in a violent life, and Jeffery Wright is outstanding as a freed slave who fights for the bushwhackers out of loyalty to his friend who freed him. All of the roles are well cast and acted, including Jewel in her film debut as a young Confederate widow.

`Ride with the Devil’ is the best done of any Civil War film that I have yet seen. It is beautifully filmed, skillfully acted, intelligently written, and tells its account with fairness and perspective. Unfortunately, its virtues are exceeded by its obscurity, as so many have never heard of it. Now that you know of it, don’t cheat yourself by missing this outstanding film.

This is one of those rare movies where everybody got it lawful —from the cinematography to the casting; from the musical obtain to film editing; from costume invent to second unit directing this movie is nearly flawless. The directing by Ang Lee (Sense and Sensibility) and the performance by a improbable ensemble cast build this movie in a league with the astronomical unusual frontier movies like The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Long Riders.

Set on the Missouri/Kansas border during the American Civil War, the movie faithfully recreates the narrative told by Daniel Woodrell in his fantastic unusual, Woe To Live On. The book is worth reading for the dialogue alone and the movie is worth watching simply for James Schamus’ lovely screenplay: But there is considerable disappear to like about this movie.

The tapestry upon which the fable of Scurry With The Devil is painted is a violent one but, apart from some very graphic scenes, is more about human nature than anything else. Indeed, the depth of the violence only adds to the poignancy of the surprisingly frequent gentle scenes that occur in the movie. Tobey Macguire is perfect in the lead role, Jewel gives a surprisingly intuitive performance, and Jefrey Wright almost steals the indicate with his low-key, but passionate performance as a freed slave riding with a gang of white bushwhackers. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Macguire’s nemesis, has a petite section but is death himself. (His final confrontation with Macguire is brief and chilling — and encapsulates the entire sense and sensibility of the movie.)

Sadly, this movie will probably go unnoticed by the general public since it seems to have had a itsy-bitsy release in the US and gone almost immediately from the theater to the rental market. Hopefully word-of-mouth will develop interest in this truly distinguished American classic. Notice it — but read the book too.

I judge that I am mild relatively honorable in saying that Blade Runner is one of the most prolific and inspired sci-fi movies of all time. But there are peaceful several qualms that many people, myself included, have with the DVD release. First of all, the sound and video transfer flat out suck. There is no 5.1 sound, and as for the video, well, that’s honest because no archival negative has ever been made, so what you witness is what you secure. Secondly, the only version of the film that you can win on DVD format is the “Director’s Slice”, which is impartial a hurried fix-up from the current. Ridley Scott even said himself that he wasn’t totally gay with this version, but it met his basic artistic vision of the film. Lastly, there are not special features except for a crappy cast and crew synopsis.

Okay, so before you open to mediate that I’m totally blasting the film, gain on. The legal version of this film is yet to be seen by anyone. According to Scott and Warner Bros., a three-disk, definitive version of Blade Runner is supposed to be released. Contained will be all the different versions of the film, including a current version which Scott has painstakingly digitally re-edited and reworked. It’s not the unusual, it’s not the director’s slice, but it’s fair simply, “Blade Runner”. Also included in the “Blade Runner: Special Edition” will be loads of extras, including interviews and documetaries. This is the moral version of the movie, the version that should be viewed by the masses. One pickle though. Moral struggles between Scott, Warner Bros., and the “Blade Runner Partnership” have made the release of this version all but clear. Scott has already done the work, and Warner Bros. is ready to distribute, but Jerry Perenchio of the “Partnership” seems less than thrilled to let Scott have his intention.

So, my advice is to have out until the “Special Edition” comes out. I know, who knows when that will be, but trust me, if you are a fan of Blade Runner, you will only be doing yourself a favor by waiting.

There has been mighty discussion over which version of Blade Runner is the best. I have to say that, although I like the director’s chop, it is the recent version that really captured my heart and imagination. First of all, the narration made Blade Runner into a futuristic version of the outmoded murky and white private recognize films. This gave the movie a Tall retro feeling and in my view revealed more about Deckard’s character than the director’s nick was able to. Secondly, the director’s reduce really seems to go out of its draw to drive home the point that Deckard is a replicant as well. I don’t judge that made the movie any stronger or better, it unbiased made it “different”. Rather than a human who finds care for in a replicant and learns that you don’t have to be a trusty person to be human in the recent, you have a replicant who doesn’t know he’s one killing replicants and the numerous issues that go along with that. Anyway, if the franchise wants to really get some money, they should release an ULTIMATE EDITION BLADE RUNNER DISC Location with BOTH versions on DVD. They would satisfy everyone, and give people a chance to examine both versions and think for themselves which is best.
